Italian Baby Techniques

One of the most annoying things about being a new parent is handling all of the unsolicited advice you get. To top things off, I have to combat the strange old-world techniques that my Italian mother-in-law (and her 3 sisters) swear by.

Yes, my mother-in-law thought that baby wipes gave my child a diaper rash…she thought that he ALWAYS had to wear at least two layers of clothing…she wouldn’t/won’t consider taking him outside without a blanket (its 70 degrees)…she thinks that holding him up in the standing position is bad for his legs…she thinks that he should be eating pasta (he’s not 7 months old yet)…she puts crushed up “cookies” in his milk/bottles…she doesn’t want to feed him vegetables because she thinks he “HATES” them…she doesn’t believe in ever sitting him down…she never did “tummy time” with him because she didn’t think he liked it…and she picks him up every time he cries…

So now I have a nearly 7 month old son who won’t eat vegetables, who thinks he is always supposed to have cookies with his milk, who doesn’t even consider crawling because he doesn’t know what the floor is, who won’t go to sleep on his own, and who expects his butt to be washed in the sink after we change his diaper (because wipes are bad for babies).

Ahh, the joys of motherhood. At least he is really cute.

      Giuliana,
Do any of these sound familiar? Are these Sicilian or just Neapolitan? I am not joking about any of them. They are hilarious but TRUE! :-)

Sarah, that was funny and crazy at the same time! I probably should post my russian mom advices, but wouldn’t… because people will think my mother’s insane (at least my husband thinks so)! :) ))
